30 Days of Hummelberry|Day 12| A Rachel Scene That Made You Laugh
(via fuckyeahpuckleberry)
“Take a seat Rachel” the play’s director said as the petite brunette placed herself down onto the chair in front of his desk “Look” she stated “I know what you are going to say and I totally agree with you, this part is just not suited to my wealth of talent, I’ll be more than happy to re-audition for a more prominent role.” He looked at her confused, “no Miss Berry, I’m afraid that there is no room for you in our company at this present time, whilst you are clearly very talented, you are not suited to this production… I am extremely sorry” “but…” she went to speak but instead deflated into the back of the chair, she’d run out of fight so instead picked herself out of her seat and headed towards the door. “Miss Berry” the tall ageing man spoke, “you must never give up, in fact this is just the beginning, let fate play a hand, what you’ve always wanted could be just around the corner” Rachel nodded with a small curled up smile before exiting the door.
Rachel Berry was running out of energy, after four years of between college auditioning and a year of spending each and every day being rejected she wasn’t sure how much she could take, she thought it would be easy, but apparently being the big fish in a small pond called Lima, Ohio made being just another little fish in the big pond called New York City so much harder. As she left the theatre Rachel began to break down. She was lonely and uninspired, never give up she remembered the words of the director just minutes before. The fact is those words had echoed in her mind for the past 5 years, ever since a certain mohawked Jewish boy wrote them in her yearbook, “never give up” she kept thinking. As she turned the corner she bumped hard into a tall frame “sorry “she said, keeping her head down and walking away “Rachel?” she heard in a familiar tone, she turned “it can’t be, it’s not” she thought before she looked up and saw that very mohawked Jewish boy standing right in front of her, except now he was minus the Mohawk and very much a man. “Noah” she said quietly before running and crashing herself into his arms, “nice to see you too Berry” he said with a laugh, “hey what’s wrong” he looked down to see the tears running down her face.
Noah walked silently with Rachel to the nearest diner before ordering them both a cup of coffee and sitting down across from her, he just stared for a while, and she was just as beautiful as he remembered, but that sadness in her eyes killed him. “So are you gonna tell me what’s wrong, I will sit here all day if I have to?” he sighed. “Why are you here Noah?” she said confused. “I’ll explain later, tell me why I randomly bump into you sobbing alone in the middle of the street Rach” he said urgently. She looked up at him and in that moment felt safe, so it all came pouring out at a rate that even shocked her;
“I came to New York to be a star Noah, I did as my father’s asked and I went to college but I also auditioned in every waking moment I wasn’t studying, since graduation I’ve spent almost every day being rejected, at first I thought this was supposed to happen but you know how many productions I’ve been booked for Noah? TWO just TWO, one of which I would rather not discuss because my lawsuit is still pending, the second was an off-off-off Broadway production of a children’s book… I was a tree Noah… A TREE” at this point she was lent over the table and he had to peel her from the tight grip of desperation she had on his sweater. She took a deep breath and continued “and you know what’s worse, it’s the feeling of failure, everyone cheered me off to NYC, ‘you’re a star Rachel’, ‘you have more talent than this town can handle Rachel’ ‘everyone is waiting on you to be a superstar’ well look at me Noah, I can barely pay my rent, I work the box office at a local theatre, I spend my days being told my voice isn’t good enough, or I’m not pretty enough, I can’t do it anymore, I’m so lonely here and I just, I can’t….” her voice cracked and she burst into tears again placing her head into her hands, Puck scooted around the booth and pulled her into a tight hug. She looked up at him “you told me to never give up Noah, but I have.”
“Bullshit” Puck said angrily, “the Rachel Berry I knew would never let this knock her down, this is the girl who was slushied every day, got publicly egged by her traitor boyfriend, thought singing ‘run Joey run’ in public was a good idea, found and lost her Mom in the same week and moved alone to another state to follow her dreams, so I call bullshit, you aren’t giving up… I won’t let you.”
Noah Puckerman would be lying if he said he hadn’t taken the job in NYC for her, he hadn’t spoken to her since graduation and for all he knew she could be freaking married with four kids, but still he moved his average life from Ohio to New York, just praying he would see her. Rachel just stared at him she couldn’t exactly deny the fact that the one person she could never shake off was Noah Puckerman, so to have him here right now, just when she needed him the most, meant something right?
It kind of scared him, the intensity of the situation, she was loose cannon, unexpectedly she leaned forward and gently kissed him before pulling away and looking into his eyes with that smirk he always loved. “Why are you here Noah?” she whispered. He was nervous, they had bumped into each other literally half an hour ago, even for a stud like him this was fast, he thought carefully about what he was going to say, he’d waited five years for this moment, five long years since he confessed his love for her in her yearbook, he took a deep breath before whispering back “well, five years ago you told me not to be a stranger, so I decided not to be” she giggled before pulling him into a tight hug. “Thank you Noah” she paused just soaking in the moment before continuing “you know, I also said that New York is definitely not too big for the both of us” he hummed in reflection…“good job I’m not going anywhere then.”
As he kissed her cheek goodnight Rachel felt content, whether this would blossom into what she’d always felt or simply meant she had her best friend back, she needed this. She also couldn’t help but think back to what the director had said earlier in the day “let fate play a hand, what you’ve always wanted could be just around the corner” and how very right he was.
